![]() ![]() The rabab is a fretless Persian folk instrument dating back to as far as 5,000 years ago and was originally strung with gut strings. It is the predecessor of the Indian sursinagr and sarod. It has an ebony fretboard with a skinned head, capable of covering three + octaves. It is traditionally played with a cocnut pick that looks like a large, thick, wooden guitar pick. Our design of sarod is a combination of the Indian sarod and the Persian rabab. The wooden, rather than metal fret board, creates a warmer sound. It is normally open tuned, with the eight resonance strings tuned to the desired scale. An ideal open tuned instrument requiring some degree of musical experince. Eventually a fretless instrument is surely the freest of all instruments.
